Indigo Revolution began in 1859 in Govindpur village, Nadia district under the leadership of two peasants Digambar Biswas and Bishnu Biswas.
The peasants refused to grow indigo at such high rate of interest and created a force of their own to fight against the lathiyals and the physical coercion of the planters.
The rebellion proved to be successful because of the unity between Hindu and Muslim peasants, and the tremendous support and cooperation received from the Nationalist newspapers, and the government.
