A DNA molecule consists of two strands that wind around each other like a twisted ladder.Because the two strands of a DNA molecule have complementary base pairs,the nucleotide sequence of each strand,automatically supplies the information needed to produce it's partner. DNA replication is the process of copying a double stranded DNA prior to mitosis and meiosis. What happens, when the two strands of a DNA are separated----Each strand is used as a template to produce a complementary strand. Each template and it's new complement together, then, form a new DNA double helix, idendical to the original. Though details would be quite complex, I just explained, as easy, as the answer could be.
