How do animals in the tropical rainforests live on different layers of the forest?Explain with examples.

Answer:
To avoid competition for food, the animals in tropical rain forests confine themselves to different layers of the forest. The different layers of the forest are:
i. The topmost layer consists of tall trees. This is called the emergent. Animals such as eagles, monkeys, bats and some insects are found in this layer.
ii. Below the emergent is a dense layer of trees growing in less space. This layer is called the canopy. About 70–90% of life in the rainforest exists in this layer. Animals such as sloth, snake, lizard, insect and bird (like toucan) are found in this layer.
iii. Below the canopy is the understory. It receives only 2–15 % of the sunlight that falls on the canopy. Understory contains leafy herbaceous plants that can tolerate low light. Animals such as jaguars, frogs and leopards are found in this layer.
iv. Below the understory is the forest floor. There is almost no vegetation in this layer.
Animals such as anteaters, snakes, mice and insects are found in this layer.
