Studies suggest that birds generally use their sense of smell and the sun as a compass, to reach the right location during flights of short distance.

Migratory birds fly hundreds to thousands of kilometres, between their breeding grounds and winter habitat in far off lands.

Though the exact method of navigation of these migratory birds remain a mystery, based on studies and research, scientists now know that a phenomenon known as ‘declination’ help these birds reach their far off, destinations. Declination is based on the difference between earth’s magnetic pole and the true North pole, which birds somehow make use of, for their navigation.

In long distance flights birds appear to navigate with the help of the Sun and stars possibly in combination with a reading of the earth's magnetic field with the help of inbuilt magnetic compass present between eye and brain
