The presence of cholesterol as part of the structure of the membrane helps i this. During cold temperature the phospholipid molecules tend to stick to each other. Cholesterol which is a long molecule oriented in a diagonal way prevents the distance between them to be so close. This guarantees that they do not stick and hence less chance for cracks to form.
