The children of the rag pickers grow up to be equal partners in survival because as they grow up to follow in the footsteps of their parents. There aren't any other opportunities available to them for a change of job. Survival in Seemapuri meant rag-picking and over the years it had acquired the status of a fine art. Garbage was gold to them and it was their daily bread, roof over their heads even if a leaky one at that. For a child, rag picking was still a wondrous task because in the innocence of their childhood they looked at it as a treasure hunt. But when they grew up, it would become their means of sustenance.
