Charge separation in clouds is caused by the collisions between ice particles. When two ice particles of equal charge but different size collide, electrons tend to move from the small particles of ice to the larger particles. Since the larger particles tend to be heavier, they fall through air faster, causing a charge difference to be carried away. Wind can also assist in ice particle separation.
If the charge difference across a cloud is large enough, Lightning can occur.
