IUDs increase phagocytosis of sperms within the uterus and the Cu ions released suppress sperm motility and the fertilising capacity of sperms. The hormone releasing IUDs, in addition, make the uterus unsuitably for implantation and the cervix hostile to the sperms.

The IUD releases copper ions within the female reproductive tract that inhibit the movement or motility of sperm. As the motility of the sperm is suppressed, fertilization does not happen. Sperm movement is interfered with by Cu2+ ions. Thus, IUDs releasing copper act as an effective contraceptive measure.
