how do desert plants reduce loss of water?

Plants which grow in deserts are termed to be xerophytic. They have a later called cuticle which is extremely thick and this prevents the loss of water. They don't have leaves, hence water loss by transpiration is prevented. They have thorns which protects their water from being consumed by other animals.
