How do frictional forces affect the operation and efficiency of a machine?

The more moving parts a machine has, the more energy it loses to friction because the parts rub together. Machines can lose energy to other processes as well. For example, a car engine has an efficiency of only about 25 percent. It loses much of the energy supplied by its fuel to heat from combustion.
