Earth's surface warms up in sunlight and at night the surface cools down releasing the heat back into the air. But some of the heat is trapped by the greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere. Greenhouse effect of earth's atmosphere keeps some of the sun's energy from escaping back into the space at night.
