The ionic compound of sodium chloride is formed in following way:

  • The sodium reacts with chlorine atoms, where the one electron from the sodium atom is lost to the chlorine atom.
  • By this way the sodium atom forms the sodium ion (Na^+) and by gaining the one electrons, the chlorine atoms is converted in to chlorine negative ions (Cl^-).
  • Thus the sodium chloride is formed as an ionic compound and hence these contains ionic bonds.
