The joints at the knee are unidirectional and move toward one direction only. On the other hand, the joint of the ankle allows circular motion that is movement in all the directions.

The joints at the knee are Hinge Joint and the joints at the ankle are Plane Joint. Hinge joint move up till 180° and plane joint do not move too much only up, down and a little side. So thes both joi ts move differently in this way.
