Lymphocyte activation occurs when lymphocytes (B cells or T cells) are triggered through antigen-specific receptors on their cell surface. This causes the cells to proliferate and differentiate into specialized effector lymphocytes.

The activation of T and B lymphocytestakes place through a series of processes in which, in addition tolymphocytes, antigen presenting cells and antigens have a role. Cytokines also participate in this important process of the adaptive immune response. They do so by enhancing theactivation of T and B lymphocytes.
