Lysosome defend the cell by killing or digesting foreign material or antigens entering the cell. They digest food in the cell with the help of their hydrolytic enzymes. They also eat up worn out or dead organelles in the cell, thus cleaning it.

Lysosomes do this because they're membranous vesicles (bags) filled with powerful digesting enzymes.
Lysosomes role in defence:
Kills pathogens by secreting the digestive enzyme over it.
Digestion and cleansing :
Worn out cell organelles or dead cell organnelles are digested by the same enzymes and hence cells are cleansed.
Suicidal bags : these enzymes might be released sometime due to disturbances and all the contents of the cell are killed. Hence the enzymes digests it's own cell..
