Mendel experimented first for two traits , shortness and tallness in pea plants .
in the F1 generation ( first ) , all the plants were tall but in self pollination of the F2 generation , a quarter (1/4) of plants were short . this shows that shortness as a trait was also passed to next generation . this showed that shortness is a recessive trait (expressed by Mendel as tt ) and tallness a dominant trait ( expressed by Mendel as TT and Tt )
