the metals or non metals react, to complete it's valence shell so they need to gain , donate or share the electrons

but metals only loose electron to complete its octet or duplet and same non metals gain the electrons to complete it's octet or duplet to become stable like nobal gases.

so metals donate electron and can not react with metals to become stable

and same is with non metals

But keep carbon seperated as it shares the electrons
