Because metals are basic in nature and non metal are acid. And as u might know bases and acids they don't go very well together. I would give you an example for this :-
You might know about this miniature model of volcano, which u must have seen in a science exhibition, in that the volcano erupts because of the reaction between viniger and baking soda. Where vinigeer is asetic acid and baking soda which is a compound of sodium and carbon dioxide which is actually basic in nature . In the reaction of mixing both of these, a huge amount of carbon dioxide is realised which causes the eruption.
