how do metals get tatnished​

Ametal tarnishes due to oxidation. It forms and oxide layer on the metal.

eg: copper, when new it is shiny, but after a time outside, it goes green.

Most of the metals tarnish because surface has higher energy as compared to the core of the material. Every system in this universe tends to decrease its energy. Hence , the metal surface will react with its surrounding environment and lower its energy. Generally , most of the metals they form an oxide layer by reacting with oxygen available in the atmosphere. For eg. Aluminium has a dull surface appearance due to the oxide layer.
