Reactive metals can displace less reactive metals from their salt solutions.

Activity,

Place an iron nail in copper sulphate solution for a day and keep another iron nail and a test tube containing copper sulphate solution aside for comparison.

Observations : the cuso4 solution has changed its colour from blue to green and their is a reddish brown deposit on the iron nail.

Conclusions: Iron being more reactive than copper has displaced copper from copper sulphate solution to give iron sulphate solution which is green in colour.

Fe + CuSO4 ⇒ FeSO4 + Cu
