This is a very true statement. Actually, a person is a collection of his experiences, his thoughts, his memories, his beliefs. Whatever a person thinks, somehow applies in his life whether its good or bad, and due to this thing his thoughts make up a part of his life.
If a person experiences a lot of bad moments in his life, he gets exhausted and indeed can become a bad person and vice versa. Therefore it is suggested to keep your thoughts as much positive as a person can.
