The muscles work in pairs.

  • When one of them contracts, the bone is grabbed in that path, and the other muscle of the pair relaxes. To shift the bone in a different orientation, the relaxed muscle contracts to grab the bone towards its initial position, while the first muscle relaxes.
  • A muscle can only grab. It cannot thrust.
  • Muscles can pull bones, but they can't push them back to their original posture. So they serve in pairs of flexors and extensors. The flexor contracts to bend the arm and leg at a joint. Then, when the activity is attained, the flexor relaxes and the extensor contracts to expand or straighten the limb at a similar joint.
