Plants get nutrients from the soil in which they grow. They also get nutrients from moisture and other elements in the air! The nutrients are absorbed from the soil by the roots of the plants.

Roots collect nutrients by using a hormone called auxin and having tiny hairs called root hairs. These hairs help absorb nutrients and auxin spreads out the roots so that they have plenty of surface area. Having a larger surface area increases the rate of absorption.
