CO2 is taken in by the stomata, mostly on undersides of leaves. Water is taken up from the soil by plant roots. Oxygen is given off by the leaves. But the roots also require oxygen and waterlogged soil can drown and kill plants if oxygen supply to roots is cut off for too long.
