How do S and P waves move through a solid material

S-waves travel in transverse waves,i.e., the motion of particles is perpendicular to the direction of the wave-propagation through the ground while P-waves travel in longitudinal waves,i.e.,  the direction of movement of the particles is in the direction of propagation of the wave through the ground.
