Explanation:
In this chapter, we focus on the ways in which schools either promote children's developmental competence or reinforce developmental difficulties. First, we describe the school as a multilevel context that influences children's social-emotional and behavioral development through organizational, social, and instructional processes that operate at several different levels. These levels range from the immediate, very proximal relation between students and the tasks they are asked to perform to the role of the principal and the school board in setting school-level policies, which, in turn, influence the social organization of the entire school community. Then, we discuss three examples of how these multilevels work together to influence development through their impact on the daily experiences children and adolescents have as they enter and pass through the school system. The first example focuses on the transition into elementary school; the second, on the transition from elementary school into either junior high school or middle school; and the third, on the transition into high school. We end the chapter discussing how both the school and the community affect development through their influence on peer groups and the opportunities for participation in organized activities.
