The sailors encouraged the mariner to kill the albatross. After he kills the albatross, he was blamed for killing it which had brought bad luck that had affected them. The mariner was also blamed for destroying the good omen.
Thus it is always the human beings tendency to blame others. They wanted to kill the albatross but blamed it on the mariner.
