Answer:
The Sacred Turtles of Kadavu tells the cultural practice on an island named Kadavu in Fiji. The maidens of Namuana village in Kadavu sing a chant at the beach. Giant turtles rise to the surface to listen to the chant. If any member of the village of Nabukelevu is present the turtles will not appear. The ritual is based on an ancient legend. According to the legend, the wife and daughter of the chief of Namuana village went fishing in the reefs near the village. They were named Tinaicoboga and Raudalice respectively. Both of them were very beautiful. They did not notice fishermen warriors approaching them from the sea. They were captured from the beach by the fishermen from the village of Nabukelevu. As the warriors were returning to their village, there was a storm and the two women were transformed into turtles. In order to save themselves the warriors threw the turtles into the sea. Once the turtles were released the sea became calm. The turtles did not turn back into humans and continued to live in the bay. It is the descendants of these turtles that respond to the chants of the women from Namuana village.
