the Baker had said to his wife to send the eel pie to the person whom he sends.but his wife asked how to find out if he was the person sent by the Baker so the Baker said that when the person comes to take the pie he will kiss her hand.this conversation is heard by Jean and he tells this to pierre and he tells pierre to act as the messenger and take the eel pie.
when gaultier comes back he is surprised that the eel pie is not there. when his wife tells him everything he waits there to see who comes to get the tart. then Jean comes to take the tart when the Baker catches him and asked him what he has done with the pie he puts the blame on Pierre the Baker asks him to send pierre. when Pierre comes to get the tart he lies that he took the pie to the mayor's house ànd that the mayor has come back to his house. so the Baker goes to the mayor's house and gives the tart to Pierre to carry it to the mayor's house but Jean and Pierre both escape with the cranberry tart.
in this way the vagabonds outwit the Baker and his wife and walk away with pie and tart.
hope it helps
