The hormones that regulate ovulation come form the pituitary gland (hanging under the brain). They are FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) that increases slowly and gets the process started by causing primordial eggs to develop into follicles.
Then in response to feedback by the ovary hormones, LH (luteinizing hormone) is produced in a spike (a lot of it is a few hours) and causes one or more follicles to rupture & release the egg.
