The hydroxides of metals are called bases.
There are certain compounds which are not metal hydroxides but consider as bases. Such bases when dissolved in water forms hydroxides (bases).
Ex: NH₃ + H₂O → NH₄OH
In the above example NH₃ (ammonia) is a base which dissolved in water forms base NH₄OH (ammonium hydroxide).
The hydroxides formed by the IA and IIA group elements are called Alkalies.
And even Metal oxides also considered as base. Such metal oxides when dissolved in water forms bases or alkalies.
Ex: CaO + H₂O → Ca(OH)₂
In the above example CaO (Calcium oxide) is base(ic) in nature, dissolved in water forms Ca(OH)₂ (calcium hydroxide) an alkali.
