hen the diaphragm and accessory muscles contract, your chest expands and pulls air into the lungs; this is inhaling. As your muscles relax, the space inside your chest gets smaller and under more pressure and the air is pushed out of the lungs; this is exhaling – similar to letting air out of a balloon.

Answer:
When you breathe in, or inhale, your diaphragm contracts and moves downward. This increases the space in your chest cavity, and your lungs expand into it. The muscles between your ribs also help enlarge the chest cavity. They contract to pull your rib cage both upward and outward when you inhale.
