valance electrons are the electron on the outer most shell of the atom.
lets take an example:
(hope you know how to the electronic configuration)
we have calcium:
the configuration is- 2,8,8,2
so in the outer most shell it is 2 the valancy is also 2
we have oxygen:
the configuration is -2,6
so 8-6=2  the valancy is 2

let me explain when leaving 2 electrons will be more easy or gaining 6 more electron. leaving towill be more easy  so when the electron in the outer shell is more than 4 please minus it by 8 but when less than 4 the no. of electrons is the valancy only.when 4 valancy is 0.

hope you understood
thank you
