we put bracket when a compound itself has some valency.
ex-(CO2)3

Chemical formulaes such as Mg(OH)2 , Fe(OH)3, etc. use bracket.....
In earlier days, when brackets where not used, people used to write them as MgOOHH and such formulae such as (NH4)2SO4 used to take a lot of space .... so they were re-organized with brackets to take less space.
Notice, brackets are usually assigned to Chemical names having Hydroxides,imidogen, etc. like the ones above....so you can identify them by those tough part of their name in the last. Examples of such chemicals - Magnesium Hydroxide, Sodium Hydroxide, etc.
