how do we distinguish a medium of rarer or denser. give two reasons

They could be distinguished on the basis of density. The medium which has more density than the propogated wave is said to be denser, and the medium which is less comparatively is rarer.
And another point of he difference is, denser medium deviates the light more comparatively than a rare medium.
