Let us take an example of Sodium. It's atomic number is 11. So, we arrange it as follows-2,8,1..when you add 2+8+1 you will get 11. Every shell has some limit ..like the first shell can have only two electrons, second and third shell will have only 8 electrons..

Other examples

Mg-Atomic no- 12 so configuration will be 2,8,2

You can check ✔️ it as 2+8+2 is 12. Accordingly you can also do.
