How do we know that which pole of the magnet is north?

To know that the pole of magnet is north or not follows as :

1. Place a container and fill it with water.

2. Place a cork in it.

3. Place the magnet on the cork.

4. Leave it for a while and observe.

Observation : You should observe that cork moved towards a direction.

Result : The direction which it had settled is north. And the pole opposite to it is north.
