Answer:

The National War Memorial at Morwada junction in Pune Cantonment is a unique citizens initiative which has been constructed through their contributions. It was conceived in 1996 for Silver Jublee celebrations of India’s decisive victory over Pakistan in 1971 which led to birth of Bangladesh. The Memorial has a 18 metre high tower dressed in cherry brown granite with marble panels which carry the names of martyrs on three sides. Names of 2847 Officers, Junior Commissioned Officers and other ranks hailing from Maharashtra who laid down lives in action since Independence to December 2016 have been inscribed on the marble panels. As a mark of respect and in acknowledgement of sacrifices of our martyrs a weekly ceremonial drill is being organised on every Saturday to pay homage to the martyrs. The ceremony is open to all Puneties and gives them an opportunity to pay respect to the martyrs. The ceremony of Wreath Laying and Retreat Drill commences at 6 PM every Saturday.
