Hardness is determined by whether a given mineral is hard
enough to scratch another substance of known hardness or
whether that other substance will scratch it. Geologists use
a scale called Moh's Scale to determine hardness using
standard minerals of hardness varying from 1 to 10.
They are, in order (softest to hardest):
1. talc
2. gypsum
3. calcite
4. fluorite
5. apatite
6. feldspar (orthoclase)
7. quartz
8. topaz
9. corundum
