Reserved constituencies are constituencies that are reserved for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and only they can contest an election.


1-Seats are reserved in Lok Sabha for them.
2-In 2008 the number of students for each were raised by approximately 5 seats.
3-Only they can contest in a reserved Constituency election.
•84seats are reserved in lok sabha for SC.
•47 seats are reserved in lok sabha for ST.
•1/3 seat is reserved for women in rural&urban local bodies for women candidates.

As we all know India is a land of diversity. There is not only diversity of religions but caste as well. India is divided into classes. This further leads to inequality. There are some groups known as minorities which are discriminated and depressed in the basis to get equal opportunities.

Thus to provide them equality reserved constituencies are formed.

Reserved constituencies helps in representing minorities, weaker section of the society etc among the majority population. This is one of the components of democracy.
