Since the label wraps once around the can, the area of the rectangle is the circumference of the circle x height or (2 r) * h. Add those two parts together and you have the formula for the surface area of a cylinder. After hitting the next button, enter your calculation in the box.

A uniform cylinder is a structure consists of two circular faces up and down and a rectangular portion rolled to support both the circular faces.

That is the area of a cylinder is,

Area of cylinder=Area of two circles+Area of rectangle

When ‘r’ is the radius of the circles,

Area of a circle =\pi r^2

Area of the two circles =2\pi r^2

Let h be the height (breadth) of the rectangular portion and the circumference of the circle forms the length of the portion. Then its area is given as,

=length×breadth

=2\pi r *h

Knowing the area of each portion, the area of the cylinder can be determined as,

Area of the cylinder = Area of the two circles + Area of the rectangular portion

=2\pi r^2+2 \pi rh

As few terms are common in both the parts which can be pulled out and final formula is given by,

Area of cylinder=2 \pi r(r+h)
