The subject of asentence is the person, place, thing, or idea that is doing or being something. 
Whenever you ask a question to the verb with wh like what, where, who, etc then the answer that you will get is the subject of the sentence.

For example -  Mary \: likes \: to \: run \: at \: the \: public \: park \: .

here run is the verb. Therefore the question will be "Who likes to run in the park? " .

The answer will be the subject means  Marry \:
