The first step to creating the maps was for each student to make a Thinking Map Flow Chart of the important events of his or her life.  The creation of the flow chart was part of our introduction to Thinking Maps as they are new to our school this year

After reviewing landforms and symbolism, we discussed the types of landforms that could represent each of the individual events, or groups of events in our lives.  For example, a single mountain was determined to be symbolic of one large obstacle or difficult event.  Extending the symbolic relationship, we generalized that a series of difficult events could be represented by a mountain range.  On the other hand, a positive life event such as accomplishing an important goal might be represented by a river as fresh water symbolizes purity, and fresh water are essential for survival.

Once we had an idea of the landforms for our maps, we discussed the overall shape and appearance.  The map should tell a story and is meant to represent an allegory of each students life.  To that end, the overall shape should be representative of the individual, the theme or mood of the map.  We made an analogy to literature referring to the overall map as the story, the shape of the map as the main idea or theme, and the landforms as the story elements.

Finally, students created drafts, revised and edited much like we would for a written story, and finally created their final copies on 12x18 construction paper.  Students were expected to color all areas leaving white only where the item would be white, such as snow.  We discussed depth of color and the differences created by the three types of media we were using: colored pencils, crayons, and markers.  Students were asked to use the different effects of the media to draw attention to the aspects of their life maps they considered most important.

Additionally, each student wrote and recorded a narrative explaining the meaning of his or her map.  The style and content choices were left open.  As many students are working to find their writer's voice, this was an important opportunity to experiment with style using content about which we are extremely comfortable, ourselves.
