How do you tell if a compound is ionic or covalent by its formula?

It is very easy

For the memorization of bonding nature in a compound or we can easily determine the bonding in a compound by following given below rules.

1- Every compound that are formed between metal atom and non metal atom are ionic in nature.

e, g NaCl, KBr etc

2- Every compound that are formed between non metals atoms are covelent in nature.

e, g I--I, N2 etc

3- if covelent bond is formed between same non-metal atoms are non-polar covelent bond.

Cl2 , N2 etc

4- if covelent bond are formed between different atoms than that bond is polar in nature.

e, g water, ethanol etc

5- bonds that are formed between the atoms of metal are metallic bond.

Iron ,Mg contain metallic bond

6- bonds that are formed between two molecules, that bonds are coordinate covelent bond

e, g BF3—NH3 that bond is coordinate covelent bond
