In the 19th century, a number of new methods for conducting American election campaigns developed in the United States. The Campaign was also changed by the general enlargement of the voting franchise - The states began removing or reducing property and tax qulitifications for the suffrage and by the arly 19th century the great majority of free adult while males could vote.

During the reconstitution era, Republicans in Congress useed the military to create a biracial electorate, but when the troops was removed in 1877, blcaks stedily lost political power
