take some iron flakes and spread them all the places in a paper then place a bar magnet at the middle of the paper after sometime the bar manet attract the iron flakes in such a way that it forms a figure similar to the magnetic field
the compass needle is made up of iron piece that was suspended in zero friction that indicatess the earth's magnetic field
