we know, magnet have two pole , e.g N and S .
N pole attract by S pole , and S pole attract by N pole .
needle of compass is also a magnet .
now, when compass brought near a bar magnet , then compass deflected
(1) if needle S pole is near to N pole of bar magnet then, compass , compass directed on that direction in which direction we moves bar magnet .
(2) if needle S pole is near to S pole of bar magnet then , needle directed on that direction in which direction we moves bar magnet.
N pole attract by S pole , and S pole attract by N pole .
needle of compass is also a magnet .

A compass needle is a small bar magnet. When it is brought near a bar magnet, its magnetic field lines interact with that of the bar magnet. Hence, acompass needle shows a deflection when brought near the bar magnet.
