How does a hovercraft move smoothly on land?

The hovercraft, while moving, stays a little above the land so that there is a cushion of air between it ans the land. The hovercraft thus actually moves on this air cushion. Since there is very little friction due to air, the motion of the hovercraft is very smooth.
