In space this motion of deflecting charged particles is important for technological reasons, such as controlling the beams of electrons that are used to create images on a television screen. The Earth, acting just like a very large magnet, also produces invisible lines of force, or magnetic field lines.

earth's magnet field can travel through space and affect magnets on the International Space Station. This magnetic field also attracts small charged particles in space. When these particles are pulled into the earth's atmosphere they collide with atoms or molecules in the atmosphere.
