In eukaryotic higher plants mitochondria are needed to deal with the photorespiratory by-products of photosynthesis. Most aquatic eukaryotic algae simply secrete the glycollate produced by the oxygenase side-reaction of RUBISCO. Blue-green algae are prokaryotic and do not have chloroplasts or mitochondria but have the same photosynthetic and respiratory chemistry..
